UNEMPLOYMENT: A STEP BY STEP GUIDE
If you have been laid off from your job, this is what experts say will get you unemployment funds.
  • First, you must file a claim. You can do that by calling the center or filing online. It can be a much faster process.
  • If you were laid off you should receive your unemployment in 2 to 3 weeks.
  • If you were fired or quit your job, your claim will have to be assessed. It may take several weeks before you know your status.
How Do I File for Unemployment Insurance?
To file a claim for unemployment insurance, report in person to the nearest Job Center with proof of identification, such as a driver's license, and a social security card. Bring the names and addresses and job-site locations of any employers for whom you worked during the last 18 months.

  1. File for Unemployment -Don't be proud - you pay into the unemployment fund for a reason.
  2. Ask your current employer about severance pay, accrued vacation and sick pay
  3. Request information on the extension of your health and life insurance benefits
  4. Ask about outplacement resources

  6. Develop your resume - have a friend or colleague proofread
  7. Research and determine career options
