Many ArkLaTex restaurants offered discounted or free meals to veterans on Wednesday. It is one way the community was able to give back for their many sacrifices. Applebee's was one of them.
Brian John Barrow and Ron Fagan have known each other for more than two decades. They met at Barksdale Air Force base in the eighties.
"It's just something's that's evolved over the years and it's been a great thing. There's a special bonding that goes on between brothers and sisters in the military" says Fagan.
Barrow's from New York and served in two branches of the military over 26 years. Fagan's from Seattle and served in four branches of the military over 38 years.
"During vietnam the only people we could count on were each other, it's just a bond there that you really can't explain, but that bond will get you through anything" says Fagan.
Bonded by the military the men have watched each other's families grow. Veterans Day means different things to each of them.
"Today to remember the men and women who didn't make it home. That's what Veterans Day to me is all about, until the day I die i'll never stop remembering" says Fagan.
"You meet life long friends and of course as they get older, it hurts when they pass on" says Barrow. He says we should all say "thank you" while they are still alive. "Let them know that their service is appreciated."
Golden Corral Restaurant is honoring veterans and active duty military with a free meal from 5-9 p.m. on Monday, November 16th.
