East Texas Standoff Over, Constable Dead

Tyler Police Department Spokesman Don Martin says the Smith County Sheriff`s Department constable and deputy responded to a disturbance call about 11:00 this morning. The suspect at the residence fired shots with a high-powered rifle, hitting the two men. Constable Dale Getty died from his injuries, and Deputy Daniel Leon underwent surgery at the East Texas Medical Center for a gunshot wound. Martin says Tyler police and SWAT members negotiated with the suspect identified as 52-year-old Joseph Walsh. Martin says Walsh did exit the house in a hostile manner and was shot. Other official sources later confirmed that Walsh had died. Authorities were involved in a standoff for several hours with the suspect who resided at the home near U.S. 271.
