Arklatex inmates are making arts and crafts. The inmates at Forcht Wade Correctional Center in Keithville, La. take pride in the items they make to sale in the annual Fall Arts and Crafts festival. The festival has been held for the last 13 years. This will be the 10th for Major Corodney Specks to head the event. He says about 10% of the nearly 700 men incarcerated make items for the event. Just some of the items they make include handmade leather products, as well as hand made wood products. Speck says 5% of the money for each item goes to the inmate welfare fund and the rest goes into the inmates account. Inmate Daryl Sowell tells NBC 6 he takes great pride in the items he makes and is happy people get to enjoy them. Major Speck said, “These men are truly artists, it’s not just about the money.” He went on to say it’s a privilege and if they have any disciplinary problems they cannot participate so most of them do whatever they can to stay out of trouble.
