(Shreveport) -- The city of Shreveport reports the number of rapes reported in August was up sharply over the previous month.
Police say 24 rapes were reported last month, compared to seven in July and seven in August 2008.
Reports of shoplifting also increased--203 in August, compared to 155 in July.
Police Chief Henry Whitehorn says the departments sex crimes unit is working hard on combatting rape and has made some "high-profile arrests." The city saw a slight decrease last month in the number of aggravated assaults, homicides and robberies.
