Tax Free Weekend Could Boost The Economy

Sportsman's paradise is giving hunters a reason to shop. Louisiana is holding its first annual “Second Amendment Weekend Tax Free Holiday”. Through Sunday shoppers won't pay taxes on hunting supplies.

"Everything related to hunting or made for hunting is both state and parish tax free this weekend," explained Ed Billingsley of Academy Sports in Shreveport.

Even if you're not a hunter, you can still benefit from the tax breaks this weekend. For example, a leatherman would get the tax break. It’s a hunting supply, but it also works as an emergency preparedness supply.

"It's designed for the hunters, but there's a lot for things that cross over into other outdoor activities," added Billingsley.

Even pink camo gear gets the tax break, but it’s probably not on many hunters shopping lists.

"Here in the Arklatex, camo is a fashion statement," said Billingsley with a smile.

You won't pay taxes on ATV's and some other recreational vehicles either. The savings really adds up on the big ticket items.

"We have one customer saving over $2,000 in taxes," said Jason Kilpatrick of Shreveport Motor Sports.

The savings is also bringing in big business.

"Just today alone we've done about 20 percent of last month’s business in one day," added Kilpatrick.

It’s a win-win for hunters and the local economy.
