Emergency rooms are busier than ever. Doctors say its because of the 1986 EMTALA law, which requires hospitals to provide emergency care regardless of status or ability to pay.

"Some of these people who do have insurance, they cant get to their doctors, so they doctors end up telling them to go to the emergency room. And so the emergency rooms end of getting overflowed with generalized medical care," Dr. Mark Cimino said. Dr. Cimino says its doctors like him who are at the heart of the health care fallout. He believes if something isnt done soon, the overcrowding will get worse.

Christine Philyaw shared with us her worries about the future of health care.

"What is going to happen for the people that do have health insurance? Whats going to happen for the people that dont? Is there gonna be a break? Are we going to find something that helps us," she asked.

Many physicians believe the ultimate health care solution will lie in a partnership. Not only will the government have to provide affordable health care, but people will have to start taking preventative measures so they dont wind up in the emergency room.

"The american people are gonna have to start taking better care of themselves," he said.

Doctors are encouraging people to think before going to the emergency room. If you dont have an extreme emergency, dont go. For small matters, they suggest you seek out a free or low-cost clinic instead.
