The Shreveport Fire Department says small children are more vulnerable to very hot weather gripping the Arklatex over the last 7 days.  Emergency medical technicians say parents should watch for signs of trouble like kids becoming less alert and nonresponsive, and a lack of sweating.  These are obvious signs a child could be suffering effects of heat injury.

If you notice these warning signs you should take your child to a shaded area away from exposure to the sun.  You should also try to cool them by placing cool damp rags under their arms and on the back of the child's neck.  Firefighters say you should slowly hydrate the child with clear fluids like water.  If symptoms persist you should call 911.
