Shelby County Sheriff Newton Johnson told KTAL that a bullet from a state trooper did strike 89-year-old Dahlia Sanders in the buttock, but she had already been killed by a gunshot to the head from close range. Police believe suspect Jimmy Odessa Smith shot Sanders and stuffed her in the trunk of her car after kidnapping her early this month. Police believe Smith forced Sanders to withdraw money from her account at Citizens State Bank in Center before killing her. Smith is now charged with capitol murder in connection to the case.
