Texarkana Teen Dies From Fireworks Injury

Updated: July 9, 2007
A police investigation into a 4th of July fireworks death in Texarkana is still ongoing. 13 year old, Darrius Pollard died Friday night as the result of a head injury he received on July 4th. Police say he was in a group of people popping fireworks at each other in the Beverly neighborhood. Pollard was struck in the back of the head with a "mortar round". Police are trying to figure out who threw the explosive and what charges, if any, will be filed. "The problem that were having is being able to round up the witnesses that were there that night and try to narrow down who actually was in possession of the mortar and who fired it. Then well consider the options at that point," says Sgt. Shawn Fitzgerald, Public Information Officer with the Texarkana, Texas Police Department. Fitzgerald says there is a city ordinance in place that prohibits using fireworks inside the city limits. He says the ordinance was adopted for safety reasons to prevent incidents from happening.
