Governor Signs Bill To Ban Gambling At Cockfights

Governor Blanco has signed into law a bill that makes gambling at cockfighting events illegal. The bill's author, Senator Art Lentini of Metairie, says the law should effectively end cockfighting in the state because the activity is driven by wagering. The law will go into effect August 15th. A bill to ban cockfighting altogether would take effect on August 15th, 2008, but the governor has yet to sign or veto the measure. Louisiana is the only state that allows cockfighting.
