Texarkana Residents Worry About Speeders On Private Road

How fast is too fast when there is no speed limit posted? Some residents in one Texarkana neighborhood, Town and Country Estates, are concerned drivers are traveling too fast down the road where they live. Roaming pets and children at play arent uncommon on Springridge Lane. The road sits in a Bowie County subdivision right outside city limits. No law can be enforced on the road -- its still considered a private road because it hasnt been dedicated by the county. "I am concerned one of my grand children may get runover and killed," says resident Sue Phillips. The road wont be dedicated until it is paved, so at this time there is no speed limit. Roads around Springridge have 35 mile per hour signs posted. "I dont care if it is county or city -- there are children. There are animals," says Jessica Harring, who lives across the street from Phillips. Rusty Gilliam lives at the end of the road. Hes one of the drivers accused of speeding. "I keep it at 20 miles an hour," he says. He is also on the work crew who will eventually pave Springridge Lane and says things will be different in the near future. "As soon as this road gets paved, it will have a speed limit posted at 25 miles per hour." Resident Sylvia Jones disagrees. "25 and 30 miles an hour on a dirt road is very dangerous." Jones dog was run over by a vehicle Sunday. Shes concerned because it could have been a child. Bowie County Sheriff James Prince says theres one solution he can think of. "I think that drivers should be aware if children are at play or where there is residency at," he says. For now, that warning will have to do. "Anything at this point would be a great improvement," says Jones. Residents say before speed limit signs and children at play signs can go up, this road must be paved and dedicated by the county, They say anything is a start even if it is a driver being aware. Sheriff Prince says the speed limit on roads within Bowie County is 35 miles per hour unless otherwise posted.
