Air Force Times: No Cyber Command

No Cyber Command. That's the headline that prefaced an Air Force Times article released Wednesday. The article says the decision was made last week following a series of meetings at the Air Force Academy. The Air Force does plan to form a new command, but they're not saying much about it just yet. Retired General Peyton Cole read the article. He says Barksdale Air Force Base will be part of that new command. “It will involve Barksdale to a great degree because Barksdale has already laid the groundwork."
According to the Air Force Times article, any type of cyber mission will be based at Air Force Space Command at Peterson Air Force base in Colorado. But General Cole says that doesn't mean Barksdale isn't still part of the plan. "Space Command will be the overall operational command for cyber. But the cyber effort will probably be based here at Barksdale,"said Cole.
He says the changes mean the Air Force won't have to ask Congress for additional generals for the cyber mission. He says they're essentially reshuffling the original plan. "Instead of making Cyber Command a major command they've decided to make it either a numbered Air Force or put it under a numbered Air Force," added Cole.
