Senior Meal Rush

It's all hands on deck at the Caddo Council on Aging on Greenwood Road. Workers and volunteers from all departments come together to prepare meals for delivery to special volunteer businesses. "A whole pack of volunteers and just everyone come in early to pack the meals, " said CCOA Executive Director Mary Alice Rountree. "We get them out by 8 am and then we go back to our normal jobs."  The volunteer businesses then deliver the meals on their lunch hour, to seniors who live around that business. "These routes are saving us so much money," said Rountree. "We added 60 people last month. 60 people off the waiting list. That's the first time we've been able to do that in several years."

More than one thousand seniors receive meals everyday from the Meals on Wheels program and Caddo Council on Aging. Every year, Meals on Wheels faces budget cuts and has to keep seniors on a waiting list for meals. They are currently preparing for their annual fundraiser, the March for Meals, which will be Wednesday, March 28th at noon. The march begins at the Caddo Parish Courthouse and ends at the Texas Street bridge. Any donation is welcome. For more information, contact the Caddo Council on Aging.
