"It was very surprising to me" Like many local pet owners, Robin Snyder was shocked to hear about the massive recall of more than 60 million cans and packages of cat and dog food. "It's like when you buy human food. You trust what you buy. And it's the same way with your pets. They're part of the family. They're like your children," said Snyder. Some of the most popular brands of pet food like IAMS, Eukanuba and Science Diet are all included in the recall. That's prompted local stores like Petsmart to pull all of the affected foods from their shelves. Manager Jeff Madison says he's been getting a lot of questions form concerned pet owners. "The questions have been... 'Is it all the food?'... 'Do I need to return my bagged food and my canned food?' Jeff says the answer is no. Right now only the wet food is being recalled. "All of the bagged food is fine. And all of the canned food we have on our shelves are safe for consumers to buy for their pets," said Madison. The recall was announced late Friday. So might have already unknowingly fed your pet some of the recalled food. But to be sure, you can double-check by logging onto Menu Foods website. They have a detailed list of all the affected brands and the UPC numbers on the packaging. If you think your pet has eaten some of the recalled food, here are some warning signs to look for: a decrease in appetite, a change in water consumption and an increase or decrease in urination. Severe changes could mean your pet is suffering from kidney failure. So if anything seems out of the ordinary, contact your veterinarian immediately.
