An estimated 60,000 Katrina evacuees received unemployment payments in the wake of the hurricane to which they were not untitled. Now, The Louisiana Department of Labor is asking that they pay it back. A department spokesman says officials do not believe this is an issue of fraud. However, many of those who received overpayments were either still being paid by their previous employers after Katrina or they found new jobs during the period they filed for unemployment. Payment plans are available for those affected. If you think you were overpaid, call 1-866-783-5567 to make arrangements.
