Caddo Parish Commissioner Joyce Bowman continues her fight against cancer, and hopes to inspire her community to reach out to everyone in their life facing challenges.
It was a tough week for Bowman. Her doctors decided she would not be a good candidate for a special kind of brain surgery after learning the cancer at metastasized.
She tells NBC 6 that she's not giving up because she believes in the power of prayer and positive thinking.
After her diagnosis last summer, her church held a prayer vigil which she credits getting her this far, and hopes another vigil planned for next week has the same results.
"If they worked then, they'll work now and I'm looking forward to that. It's a very spiritual service. I'm totally looking forward to that. I'm so thankful right now, I've been receiving more cards and prayers and well wishes. I'm a public person so I don't mind going public with what's happening in my life," said Bowman.
The prayer vigil is next Thursday night at 6:30 at Morningstar Baptist Church on Jewella Avenue in Shreveport. It's expected to last about an hour.
