BATON ROUGE, La. --  Second-ranked LSU (5-1) suffered its first loss of the season Saturday night against BYU (3-5) by a score of 9-4 in Alex Box Stadium.

LSU will continue Friday's suspended game against Southeastern Louisiana Sunday at 1 p.m. at Alex Box Stadium. The game will resume with no score and LSU batting in the bottom of the first inning with runners at first and third and two out.

Sunday's game will be aired on the Geaux Zone at LSUsports.net and on 98.1 FM in the Baton Rouge area.

"We never could generate anything offensively until late in the game," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. "We weren't really bad at the plate, but we weren't very good either. We just never really squared up on the ball and never seemed to make great contact. It looked like our intensity level picked up, and we had some good at-bats in the later innings, but we had dug ourselves too big of a hole.

"The great thing about baseball is that we have a chance to redeem ourselves tomorrow; we don't have to wait a week to play again."

The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning Saturday with an RBI single from first baseman Mason Katz.

BYU answered in fifth inning and then erupted for five runs in the sixth, including a three-run home run from second baseman Brennon Anderson to give the Cougars a 6-1 advantage.

The Tigers chipped away at the BYU lead in the seventh and ninth innings, with RBI hits from shortstop Alex Bregman, who finished 2-for-4 on the night, and Mason Katz.

Brent Bonvillain provided exceptional work through the first 4.2 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out four.

Reliever Nate Fury (1-1) was charged with the loss as he surrendered five runs on four hits in the sixth inning.

BYU starter Mark Anderson (1-0) earned the win, as he limited LSU to three runs on three hits with five walks and no strikeouts.
