Police investigate shooting that leaves two people wounded

Two men are now recovering from gunshot wounds sustained following an alleged dispute that ended with an exchange of gunfire in Shreveport's Lakeside subdivision.

Just before 2 this afternoon, Shreveport Police officers were called to the 3100 block of Poland Avenue relative to a report that a man had been shot near that location.  On officers arrival, they found 18-year- old Xavier O'Neal of Shreveport suffering from what was described as a single gunshot wound to his lower body.

While at the scene, authorities learned of a second man who was located a short distance away in the 3800 block of Milam Street.

The man, identified as 27-year-old Christopher Chevalier of Shreveport, was found suffering what appeared to be a single gunshot wound to the leg.  Both men were subsequently transported to LSU Medical Center, where O'Neal was last listed in critical but stable condition while Chevalier, who not seriously injured, was listed in good condition.

Detectives with Shreveport Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit responded to the scene of the shooting along with Crime Scene investigators.

Authorities were able to gather information suggesting that moments prior to the shooting, Chevalier and O'Neal allegedly engaged in some sort of verbal disagreement during which time Chevalier allegedly produced a hand gun and fired at least one round striking O'Neal.

It is unclear at this stage of the investigation if O'Neal returned fire striking Chevalier, or perhaps other persons that were present with O'Neal during the time the incident may have fired the shots.

For his role in the shooting, detectives have since charged Chevalier with a single count of aggravated second degree battery.  Chevalier, upon his release from the hospital, is expected to be booked into the Shreveport City Jail. Authorities are urging anyone with information about this crime to contact Caddo Crime Stoppers at (318) 673-7373 or on their website at lockemup.org
