BATON ROUGE, La. - Third-ranked LSU (3-0) exploded for 14 runs on 14 hits and defeated Maryland (0-3) by a score of 14-3 Sunday at Alex Box Stadium in Game 3 of 2013 opening series.

The victory gave the Tigers the series sweep. LSU defeated Maryland 1-0 in Game 1 Friday and 5-1 in Game 2 Saturday.

"I thought we played very well in all three phases the entire weekend," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. "Today, the weather was warmer and the wind wasn't blowing in, so we were able to generate more offense. I thought our guys played more relaxed and loose with some of the opening-weekend jitters out of the way. It felt today like we're into the rhythm of the season."

Junior infielder JaCoby Jones started the scoring onslaught with a solo home run in the second inning, his first of the season.

The Tigers added a run in the third inning with an RBI single from shortstop Alex Bregman, who went 3-for-3 on the day.

Maryland answered with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth. However LSU quickly answered with a three-run home run from junior catcher Ty Ross.

LSU added a run in the fifth inning, and then piled on eight runs in the eighth inning. The eighth inning included RBI hits from third baseman Christian Ibarra, outfielder Andrew Stevenson, and infielder Tyler Moore.

Ibarra was standout defensively as well, making numerous tough plays, including a diving snag off of a line drive in the eighth inning.

Nate Fury (1-0) recorded one strikeout in one inning of work and was credited with the win.

Maryland left-hander Alex Robinson (0-1) received the loss. He gave up four runs on three hits along with four walks.

Senior left-hander Brent Bonvillain started the game for the Tigers, going four innings while striking out three. He gave up two runs on four hits.

The Tigers will take the field again on Tuesday against the Lamar Cardinals (4-0). First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Alex Box Stadium on LSU Sports Radio Network affiliates (100.7 FM in Baton Rouge) and on the Geaux Zone at LSUsports.net.
