The pews were completely full as St. Joseph school students received their ashes. Deacon Bill Roach explained that Ash Wednesday is the first day of the Lent season,
The student choir performed several hymns, and other students took turns at the podium to share more about the season of Lent.
"The ashes are a reminder of our mortality and of our need to participate in spiritual preparation for Easter. The prime practices of lint are prayer, fasting and almsgiving - or charitable giving," said Roach.
After the priest blessed the ashes, students lined up to receive them on their foreheads.
