News of the pope's resignation has taken even local Catholic leaders by surprise.  Pope Benedict the 16th is stepping down after eight years.

It's the first time in 600 years a pope has resigned the papacy.  The 85-year-old pontiff made the announcement during a meeting of Vatican cardinals this morning, citing health reasons.

Diocese of Shreveport Bishop Michael Duca says the announcement came out of nowhere.

Bishop Duca believes the pope is setting a great example.  He thinks its selfless for the pontiff to step down when health reasons limit his ability to serve.
