Residents of Bossier Parish learned about what it takes to defend themself.

22 year old Lauren Lee knew she had to learn about self defense.

"It's just good to know you can defend yourself in whatever situation you're in because we're vulnerable and men look at them as weaker."

Especially because she knew it may come in handy.

"I'm very bad about walking to my car with my earphones in or just playing on my phone, not really listening or aware of what's around me."

Gale Bruner knows from personal experience.

"I was driving home and a man cut me off in front with his car and he came up to my car. I was scared to death, it was dark and I was three blocks from home."

And she says being at the class will giver her the confidence she needs to survive.

"I walk with a cane and a limp and I want to be able to defend myself if a man came up and tried to attack me because I'm a target."

With every jab, punch and yell, Sgt. Sarah Rhodes says the strength comes from within.

"A lot of women are timid, they come across as being weak, but they're not weak. So this kind of empowers them to a point where they feel a little more confident and they take care of themselves."

And in the end, no matter your size, age, or gender, anyone can protect themself.

"If you walk with your head down and you walk like you're weak, then that's how you'll be perceived as weak and you'll be an easy target."

Another class will be held at the end of March. For more information you can contact the Sheriff's office.
