The Caddo Parish School System could be heading in a new direction.  The board voted to not renew superintendent, Dr. Gerald Dawkin's contract.

The board voted Tuesday night four to eight.  The contract was set to expire August 11th.  There have been talks the board will buy out his contract.  He worked as superintendent of Caddo schools for five years.  His last position was in Michigan.

The board will have until February 11th to offer Dawkins a new contract.  With the vote last night, several board members don't see that happening.  President Larry Ramsey says based on the vote the majority of the board is ready to move into a new direction.

The board's attorney and president will meet with Dawkins within the next month.  Ramsey says they'll have to develop an exit strategy.  After that board members could start the search for a new superintendent.

Caddo Parish School Board Member Charlotte Crawley says, "The superintendent's Vision 20/20 plan was the beginning of the end."  Crawley hopes the next superintendent is someone local.

Dottie Bell was one of four board members to vote to renew Dawkins contract.  She believes he fulfilled all requirements set by the board.

Jasmine Green voted to not renew Dawkins contract.  Green says,"My decisions are data/evidence driven and based on input that I receive from the citizens that I serve."

Board member Curtis Hooks tells NBC 6 Dawkins has the option to retire as soon as tomorrow.
