Better Wireless Coverage for Louisiana

By: Tiffany Wong
Updated: February 13, 2007
A cell phone is no longer a luxury, many use them on a daily basis and more people are counting on their phones for important business deals. "Many companies here are in the oil business and they are having a hard time communicating with the people they are working with or working for them. We want to fill in the blanks,” admitted Commissioner Foster Campbell, Louisiana Public Service Commission, District 5. That is why Alltel is trying to enhance wireless coverage and hopes to help growing communities expand. After years of businesses and citizens campaigning seven more towers are going to be built in North Louisiana. "Were always interested to hear about people needing better servicing, and need a better signal. We do a pretty good job but we are trying to keep on eye open where the opportunities are to improve,” explained Prentice O’Guinn, VP Retail Services Alltel Communications. Commissioner Campbell is quick to point out that helping out rural customers will eventually benefit everyone and with telecommunication towers in Claiborne and Sabine Parishes already complete, North Louisiana is well on the way to a hi-tech future. "We want to be advanced like any other place in America. Louisiana doesnt need to be behind any place when it comes to communication facilities. Well do whatever it takes,” said Commissioner Campbell.
