Man Cashes Checks Of Dead Wife For 10 Years

By: Staff Report
Updated: February 14, 2007
A Shreveport man is being sought by white collar crimes detectives for cashing his deceased common-law wife's retirement checks. Sheriff's Detective Robert Greer, of the Caddo-Shreveport White Collar Crimes Task Force, said London Gandy is accused of cashing the checks valued at $58,000. The checks were mailed to Gandy's common-law wife each month by the City of Shreveport, who once employed his wife, Bessie Mae Williams. Greer said Williams died of lung cancer in November of 1997. The City didn't receive word of her death until an anonymous tip to the Finance Department put detectives on Gandy's trail. On Friday, Greer obtained a warrant for Gandy's arrest on forgery charges. Gandy's bond has been set at $50,000. Gandy is a 54-year-old black male, 5'10, 185 lbs., with gray, balding hair. He has a scar under his left eye. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is urged to contact the Caddo Sheriff's Office at 675-2170 or 866-2424.
