Louisiana lawmakers are making penalties for food stamp fraud tougher starting in 2013.

The new law stiffens the penalties for unauthorized use of SNAP funds.

If convicted of SNAP benefit fraud, violators face fines ranging from $5,000 to $1,000,000.

The new law also says violators could end up in jail for up to 10 years.

The law doesn't just target violators thought. If you know about fraud and do not report it, you could be in trouble as well.

According to the law, state employees, retailers which accept SNAP benefits and adult family members of SNAP recipients who do not report violations could face fines from $250 to $5,000.
