Thousands of people travel to the ArkLaTex for the Independence Bowl and they're pouring millions of dollars into the local economy.

The Hilton Shreveport Hotel sold out Thursday and Friday and the Sam's Town Hotel and Casino sold out Wednesday,Thursday and Friday.

Businesses at the Louisiana Boardwalk are also seeing a lot of foot traffic.

"We've done real well," said Larry Wheeler, of Fantastic Sports and Memorabilia. "We went back three times on reordering the shirts and getting product in."

Wheeler said they have sold hundreds of shirts.

The Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau conducted a survey in 2006 and found that out-of-town visitors spent more than $5.7 million in the area while coming to town for the Independence Bowl. Its estimated that people who stay overnight spend around $217 each night.

The study also found that in 2006, the City of Shreveport took in more than $51,000 in sales tax revenue.
