Police urge residents to ring in the New Year with fireworks not firearms

You will go to jail if you're caught firing a gun in Shreveport on New Year's Eve.

Police are stepping up their efforts to keep residents safe while celebrating the New Year by discouraging the use of firearms.  Officers will be patrolling the streets to make sure people aren't discharging weapons within the city limits.

Authorities are reminding the community that what goes up must come down when bullets are shot into the air.  This could lead to innocent people being hurt or even killed.

The Shreveport police department is asking anyone who sees someone firing a gun to immediately call 911.
