Several local organizations have been awarded grant money to expand or create community gardens.
This year the Northwest Louisiana Master Gardeners got to hand-out $10,000 to five entities. The biggest recipient: Northwest Louisiana Interfaith Pharmacy in Shreveport who received almost $3,000.
They give free medication to low-income, uninsured members of the community. Now, they're working with the Master Gardeners and LSU AgCenter to teach their clients how to add nutritional foods to their diet.
Executive Director Janet Martin says they'll be using the funds to add four to five more beds - doubling the size of the current garden.
