As the Thanksgiving holiday nears local interstates are packed with travelers passing between Texas and Florida by way of Louisiana. Triple-A estimates that over 38-million of us will travel more than 50 miles from our home this week despite record high Thanksgiving gas prices.
Gas prices in the ArkLaTex are averaging close to $3.22 for a gallon of regular gas. That falls below the national average and lower than the $3.50 price tag at the pump last month. Travelers NBC 6 spoke with at the Texas Welcome Center in Waskom say a 2-day drive was cheaper than a 2-hour flight.
"You don't let little things hold you back, probably flying held me back, I could almost drive for half the price probably than if I flew over there," says John Wilkins who was commuting from Destin, Florida to Dallas, Texas to visit family for Thanksgiving.
Delta Airlines added an extra flight to its Shreveport Regional Airport service the day before Thanksgiving. Delta will also add an additional flight for the expected return rush on Saturday. Shreveport Airport Authority spokesman, Mark Crawford, says ample parking remains open at the airport.
