Back in September the staff at Chimp Haven were prepared to take in 10 of the 110 chimps. After learning the remaining 100 chimps would be sent to another research institute in Texas, legally this was enough monkey business.

According to the Chimp Act passed in 2000.
"Any government-owned chimps no longer needed for research would be retired to the National Chimpanzee Sanctuary which is Chimp Haven," Assistant Director Jennifer Whitaker said.

While nothing is set in stone, in order for the ball to start rolling, Chimp Haven needs to expand.

Six play yards and an open air enclosure come to a total of $2.6 million...and Chimp Haven is relying on public donations.

"There would also be a large economic positive impact on the community here. We'd create 16 new jobs and a million dollars in expenses spent toward local business," Whitaker said.
