Shreveport City Council gets tough on trash pickups

For years the Shreveport Public Works Department has been picking up items they are not required to pick up.

Under the current Solid Waste Ordinance, items like boats, couches, tires, car parts, and appliances do not have a specific place to go when you want to throw them out.

"What's going to chance is citizens are going to have to make some private arrangments for these amounts. If the city is forced, we'll have to impose an extra fee only on the violators," City Council Chairman Sam Jenkins Jr. said.

By picking up these items it has pushed the every day routes for Public Works back, making it nearly impossible to pick up all the trash on time.

The city says they plan to work with the community when a more solid plan is in place. It will take time but they hope to have it ready by January 1, 2013.
