Updated: October 12, 2012
The Mansfield Water System has issued a voluntary precautionary Boil Advisory due to an E. coli detection in Calvert Well No. 3 from sampling for EPA's Ground Water Rule and the potential for contamination as a result of this situation, the drinking water supplied by Mansfield Water System may be unsafe for human consumption.
As a precaution, it is advised that the consumers of this water system bring water to a boil before using for human consumption.
What should I do? What does this mean?
BOILING INSTRUCTIONS. Bring all water to a rolling boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation.
E. coli are microbes whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with human or animal wastes. Microbes in these wastes can cause short-term health effects, such as diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some of the elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems.
Use of the contaminated well has been discontinued, and the system will rely on its other sources to meet demand until the issue is resolved.
This advisory will remain in effect until 72 hrs after well taken offline, noon Sunday, October 14, 2012.
Questions concerning this situation should be addressed to Mansfield City Hall at 318)872-0406 or P.O. Box 773 Mansfield, LA71052
