Haughton man arrested after two-hour standoff with BPSO deputies

Bossier Sheriff's deputies arrested a Haughton man late Wednesday afternoon after he caused a nearly two-hour standoff at his residence in Dogwood where it appeared he intended to blow up his house in the residential neighborhood.

Deputies were called to the residence in the 2600 block of Southcrest Drive around 4:50 p.m. Wednesday after a friend contacted the Bossier Sheriff's Office that a man inside the house, identified as Joseph Drozd, 59, had informed them that he had turned on the gas inside the house and was going to blow it up.

Sheriff's deputies began evacuating about two dozen houses in the immediate area as a safety precaution.  Sheriff's negotiators contacted Drozd by phone to bring the matter to a peaceful ending, all the while concerned that the house could possibly explode at any point.  However, Drozd would talk for a while, get upset, and repeatedly hang up on the negotiators.

Bossier Sheriff's K-9 team and S.W.A.T. members responded to the scene after Drozd said he had weapons on his person.  Bossier Parish Fire Departments staged themselves nearby while neighbors waited patiently down the street during the standoff.

Deputies were able to cut off the gas to the house at 6:30 p.m.   About 15 minutes later, Drozd walked into the backyard, and Bossier deputies quickly took him into custody.  No one else was present at the residence.

Drozd has pending charges of terrorizing, aggravated battery and resisting arrest by force.  He was transported to LSU Health Sciences Center for evaluation.
