Suicide prevention walk slated for Oct. 20 at LSUS

By: Nancy Cook
Updated: September 26, 2012

The Northwest Louisiana Out of Darkness Community Walk will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday, October 20, 2012 on the Louisiana State University Shreveport College Campus at One University Place, Shreveport, LA.

On-site registration and check-in will start at 8 a.m. with the program that includes the walk starting promptly at 9.

The Out of the Darkness Community Walks are 1-3 mile walks taking place in more than 250 communities across the country this year, with proceeds benefitting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

By participating in the Out of the Darkness Community Walks, you will be walking with thousands of other walkers nationwide to raise money for AFSP's vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increase national awareness about depression and suicide and provide support for survivors of suicide loss.

In deciding to walk you are taking us a step closer to making suicide prevention a national priority.

More than 36,000 people in the United States die by suicide every year; suicide is the country's 10th leading cause of death.

According to the statehealthfacts.org website, in 2008, Louisiana ranked 30th with a 12.1 percent suicide rate per 100,000 which is slightly above the national average of 11.6.

Advance registration is available through the following link, where you can register as an individual walker or create a team by visiting http://afsp.donordrive.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.event&eventID=1859
