Even if you're new to running you can finish your first 5K, or 3.1 mile race, in about eight weeks of training.  According to livestrong.com, you'll need to exercise five or six days a week to prepare for the race, spending 30 to 45 minutes working out.

1. Equipment. Running is an inexpensive hobby.  But you will need a few things to get you going. First, a good pair of shoes that match your foot type.  Also running socks and comfortable clothing. Specialty stores like Sportspectrum in Shreveport can help new runners get everything they need to hit the road.
2. When learning to run know it will take at least three days a week to get started. Coach and trainer Hal Higdon encourages beginners to alternate between walking and running while building endurance. You can time your intervals or use landmarks like your mailbox for motivation.
3. As you train you'll gradually get better.  Mayoclinic.com has a training schedule that's great for beginners and you can modify it to work for you.
4. Remember to stretch to aid muscle recovery. Hold each stretch for 15 to 30 seconds. Here's a link to some of the best stretches for runners. http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_1/126.shtml
