NLU football coach eyeing LSU's sacked cornerback

NBC 6 News Sports Director Brandon Dunn has received information that Northwestern Louisiana State University Coach Bradley Peveto has been "working the phones" this afternoon in an effort to bring sacked LSU Cornerback
Tyrann Mathieu to Natchitoches.

In a news conference earlier today, LSU Coach Les Miles announced Mathieu - aka 'Honey Badger' - was dismissed from the LSU football team for violation of a team/school policy.

Peveto has a history with LSU's system, having served as an assistant coach from 2005-2008; he coached the special teams and linebackers from 2005 through 2007, including the 2007 National Championship Team. In 2008, he was promoted to co-defensive coordinator of the Tigers, and served for one year before taking the head coaching position at Northwestern State.

Mathieu, a finalist for the Heisman Trophy and the nation's top defensive player a year ago, played in 26 games for the Tigers during his two years, racking up 133 total tackles, 16.0 tackles for loss and four interceptions. He also forced 11 fumbles, which ranks first in school history and seventh in NCAA history, to go with eight fumble recoveries.

Mathieu scored four touchdowns for the Tigers, two on punt returns and two on fumble returns.

Watch Brandon at 5, 6 and 10 for updates on this ever-developing story.
