Flower Mound High School added a bass fishing club this year as the sport continues to gain in popularity across the state.
Steve Davis, the high school's wrestling coach, said he was approached by students who wanted to form a bass fishing team.
"Last February, some of the kids said, 'Boy, Coach, wouldn't it be cool to be at the state bass tournament?' And I said, 'Aw, there's no such thing,'" Davis said.
Davis fished around and discovered that 18 high schools in Texas have bass fishing teams and soon after he created Flower Mound High School's first fishing club with the help of a few students like Bobby Burwinkle.
"I'm obsessed with bass fishing. It's pretty much all I do in my spare time. So, when I heard that the school had a club, I was pretty excited," Burwinkle said.
Bass fishing is not a UIL sport which means students can fish for scholarship money at tournaments.
"We had a couple of students that competed last week at the College National Championship, and at stake was a $20,000 scholarship," Davis said.
Students said that's a goal worth fishing for.
The bass fishing team is in need of adult boat captains. If you are interested, visit the Flower Mound Bass Fishing Team's website.
