Keeping the kids safe at the pool

Dr. Patrick McGauly warns of two types of dangers to look out for this summer with your kids at the swimming pools. One is the sun. Two is water safety.

McGauly said, "It takes 10 minutes on skin that's un-used to sunlight to have a severe burn." And it only takes that one time to develop some type of skin cancer in the long-run.

Parents not only need to look out for severe sunburn, but also heat strokes. McGauly said getting used to the heat can actually prevent heat stroke.

Signs of heat stroke are listlessness, vomiting and nausea.

As far as water safety, Rock Solid Sports in Shreveport is offering swimming lessons at their area pools for all ages.

"We're just hoping to increase the number of people that are comfortable in the water and know life-saving skills," said CEO of Rock Solid Sports, Shelley McMillian.

Public pools provided by SPAR and Rock Solid Sports are scheduled to open Tuesday, June 5. The seasons runs through Sunday, July 29, with the exception of Southern Hills' pool, which closes Sunday, September 2.

Rock Solid Sports is hosting an open house and free swimming Saturday, May 5 from 1-3 p.m. at the Airport Park pool.
