Tax Tip Tuesday: Consumer use tax

The consumer use tax is the tax placed on goods bought in other states, online or through catalogs that are then shipped here to Louisiana. Richard Jefferson with the Louisiana Department of Revenue says it all has to do with where you take possession of your goods. So for instance if you go online, buy a sweetgrass basket from the coast of South Carolina and have it shipped here, you'll need to keep track of the purchase and then claim 8% of it on your tax form. Jefferson says while this won't increase your tax return, you may avoid bills and penalties in the future. For more information visit: www.rev.louisiana.gov
