Bulldogs Show Improvement in Second Spring Scrimmage

Updated: March 31, 2012
The receiving corps was much improved over the last scrimmage, dropping only two passes and making 25 catches.
"It was good," head coach Sonny Dykes said. "We were crisp. We had two good days of practice on Monday and Wednesday so I thought today was good. We came out and looked fresh. It was physical like we needed it to be and both sides of the ball executed things pretty well."
Colby Cameron was dynamic on the field, connecting on 12-of-14 passes and setting up three rushing touchdowns with Hunter Lee responsible for one and Tevin King punching in the other two. Lee and King both had a short yardage touchdown and King eluded defenders late in the scrimmage to score on a 37-yard run.
"I thought Colby was sharp throwing the football," said Dykes. "Quinton was a lot better than he was a week ago. He competed hard and caught the ball better today. Rufus Porter stood out defensively as he made plays and was around the ball a lot. IK has been a hard guy to block consistently. I have been pleased with the way Jamel Johnson has been tackling in the open field as he made some key open tackles today.
Nick Isham was 6-of-12 with one interception in the scrimmage, an interception that was returned 50 yards for a touchdown by Ches Morrison. Zach Griffith was 7-of-12 with the third team offense with one touchdown pass to walk-on Ben Dickerson.
Quinton Patton led the receivers with four catches while Hunter Lee, Cooper Lewis and Myles White all added three catches each. King stood out in the running game with his two scores and several impressive runs.
"He has a different gear," Dykes said of King. "When we get a drive going and we put him in because he is fresh and the defense is worn down a bit, he has the tendency to pop one and he did that a couple of times today. He really looked like the guy we thought he would be. The thing Tevin does is that he runs physical for a little bitty guy. He is going to be a great compliment to Ray and Hunter next season."
Despite several potential starters in the fall sidelined this spring, a comprehensive depth chart is beginning to take place as Tech has now completed nine of its 15 allotted practices this spring. The Bulldogs have two more weeks of spring drills culminating in the T-Day Spring Game on Saturday, April 14 at 1 p.m. at Joe Aillet Stadium.

QUOTES
Head Coach Sonny Dykes
On the scrimmage
"It was good. We were crisp. We had two good days of practice on Monday and Wednesday so I thought today was good. We came out and looked fresh. It was physical like we needed it to be and both sides of the ball executed things pretty well."
On Wide Receivers
"They caught the ball better. These guys can check the ball and they just have to do it. They did that and made some plays. It wasn't perfect but it was a lot better than last week."
On Tevin King
"He has a different gear. When we get a drive going and we put him in because he is fresh and the defense is worn down a bit, he has the tendency to pop one and he did that a couple of times today. He really looked like the guy we thought he would be. The thing Tevin does is that he runs physical for a little bitty guy. He is going to be a great compliment to Ray and Hunter next season."
On Defensive Line
"I thought they did a pretty good job, especially the first group. IK is still a tough guy to block. He can run, is active and uses good technique. He has been a consistent guy for us all spring. Thought we played a little bit better up front at times and were solid in our gaps in the running game and rushing the passer.
On who stood out today:
"I thought Colby was sharp throwing the football. Quinton was a lot better than he was a week ago. He competed hard and caught the ball better today. Rufus Porter stood out defensively as he made plays and was around the ball a lot. IK has been a hard guy to block consistently. I have been pleased with the way Jamel Johnson has been tackling in the open field as he made some key open tackles today.
On depth:
"It has been good. We have some guys dinged especially at Y receiver position. Greenwalt has a pulled hamstring. Cooper Lewis, a walk-on, did some good things today by making some catches and blocking. The second offensive line is probably the most improved unit on our team. Larry Banks is pushing Oscar at the tackle spot. Cano has been consistent at the center and really starting to come on. I have been pleased with those guys."
