Dr. Lourdes DelRosso, of LSU Health Shreveport, says World Sleep Day raises awareness for sleep disorders and sleep habits. This year's the World Association of Sleep Medicine is focusing on sleep apnea, which if undected can be deadly. DelRosso says that's because restricted airways can cause you to stop breathing. So how do you know you have it? DelRosso says spouses and parents often notice snoring first. But you may also suffer from the disease if you're more tired than usual despite keeping the same sleep patterns. Another reason for World Sleep Day is to highlight good sleep habits. DelRosso says those are mostly keeping a regular bedtime and awake time, staying away from caffeine and alcohol for bed and exercising earlier in the day.
