Summerfield Elementary Principal Le Ann Skinner says her school succeeds because of its teachers, "I'm proud to be here because our teachers are so dedicated and so wonderful. Their goal is to instruct these children, make them happy, welcome and send them home having learned something very day."

Summerfield is home to more than 700, Pre-K through 5th graders and has what Skinner calls the best autistic program in the district, "we have the best autistic teachers in the parish bar none."

So good in fact severely autistic children come here even if they aren't zoned for Summerfield, because of the training and technology available, "they're offered here what they're not somewhere else because our teachers are so well trained and so dedicated to instruction of autistic children," says Skinner.

Another group  of teachers secured more
than $7,000 in grant money for classroom supplies this year.  Skinner says its just another way they live out their motto daily, "at the end of the day its not the minutes in the classroom, mathbook or language book kids remember.  It's the hugs from their teachers, the kind words from their teachers, those are things they're going to take home with them."

We'll have more with Summerfield Elementary every day this week in our School Spotlight.
