BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. - A controlled burn will take place in several locations on the East Reservation of Barksdale Air Force Base, La., Jan. 4.
The burns are scheduled to take place between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. The fires will be closely monitored by base fire department officials.
Various areas of the East Reservation are burned on a rotational schedule every three years. Controlled burns destroy excessive undergrowth and prevent wildfires from spreading in the heavily wooded areas of the East Reservation. Controlled burns also benefit wildlife by removing thick areas of brush allowing for easier travel and facilitating new growth which is often more favorable for wildlife consumption. About 500 acres will be burned Jan. 4, out of the 3,000 acres designated to be cleared of excessive brush this year.
The East Reservation is comprised of approximately 15,000 acres and hosts several lakes and recreational areas, as well as base housing and amenities for members of Team Barksdale.
