Not quite that many are expected at a local event at Barksdale Air Force Base. The Barksdale Oktoberfest is based on the traditional German Oktoberfest, a 200 year-old festival held in Munich. The event, which lasts 16 days leading up to the first Sunday in October, includes large amounts of hearty food, Bavarian delicacies and beer.
Friday is the 4th annual event at the base.
"We're really exccited about this year's Oktoberfest" says Julianne Schuette, a food services officer. She's a first timer at the event.
"I'm looking forward to the band, real German beer, real German food" she says.
"We've got to have bratwurst, schnitzel, sauerkraut, cabbage, german potato salad which is a hot potato salad" says Ellen Weaver, club manager and German native.
She arrived at the Barksdale three weeks ago and has been planning for this event ever since.
"Everyone leads such a busy life and running every direction so here we get together, get to meet each other, talk and make new friendships" she says.
Barksdale's Oktoberfest kicks off Friday, September 30th at 4:30 p.m. in Hangar II. The German buffet and band start at 6:30 p.m. You must have a military ID to participate. For more information, call 318-456-4926.
Next year's event is expected to be two days. The first would be for adults only and the second would be a family friendly, fair type atmosphere.
