Barksdale Profile: Planning, Executing Bombing Missions Part Of Everyday Life

A major air force mission is located right here in the ArkLaTex.

Air Force Global Strike Command is celebrating its two year anniversary soon.

The organization oversees the nation's most powerful weapons.

"We're responsible for all the nuclear capable bombers and all the intercontinental ballistic missiles in the air force.  Its a big job" says Lieutenant Colonel Rod Cousins.

Air Force Global Strike Command is headquartered at Barksdale Airforce Base.

"What our job is to ensure the safety, security and effectiveness of our nuclear arsenal" says Major Jason McCree.

Major Jason McCree and Lieutenant Colonel Rod Cousins are just two of the 900 people who work in the major command.
Planning and executing missions around the world.

"Our bombers here at Barksdale and other bases conduct global strike operations. They can range across the entire planet and drop bombs as required. That's something that keeps other people at bay" says Lieutenant Colonel Rod Cousins.

"What we are here to do is to ensure our bombers are ready to take on any mission. Anytime, anywhere they're needed" says Major Jason McCree.

Air Force Global Strike Command is made up of
-Five bases: Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming, Missouri and Louisiana. 
-Two aircraft: the B52 and the B2.
-The Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Mission
-About 23,000 people.

"They have done their job that makes a lot of other people in the world stand down and go I don't want to mess with this when American can do this and be on my doorstep in 24 hours" says Lieutenant Colonel Rod Cousins.

People inside the Global Strike headquarters on Barksdale Air Force Base are working on the new START treaty and what the structure will look like in the military to carry out President Obama's treaty he negotiated with Russia.
