AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 5 Texas Longhorns were named the No. 7 national seed for the 2009 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, the NCAA Selection Committee announced on Monday.
The Longhorns, who were announced as a host on Sunday, are grouped with the Texas State Bobcats, Kent State Golden Flashes and Princeton Tigers for play at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The four teams will play in a double-elimination regional with Kent State facing Texas State and Texas hosting Princeton on June 3.
As a top eight national seed, Texas is guaranteed to host a super regional if they advance past the regional round. The winner of the Austin Regional will face the winner of the Tempe Regional (Arizona State, Arkansas, Charlotte, New Mexico) for the right to play in the College World Series.
Since the NCAA began awarding eight teams with a "National Seed" in 1999, Texas has earned a top eight designation on six prior occasions, including the top seed in 2004 and 2009.
The other seven national seeds include No. 1 Virginia, No. 2 Florida, No. 3 North Carolina, No. 4 South Carolina, No. 5 Florida State, No. 6 Vanderbilt and No. 8 Rice.
Texas is looking for its seventh national title. The Longhorns won College World Series crowns in 1949, 1950, 1975, 1983, 2002 and 2005.
The Longhorns won a share of the Big 12 Conference regular-season title, finishing with a 19-8 league mark, tied with Texas A&M. Texas currently owns a 43-15 overall mark.
