Residents of a northeast Detroit neighborhood are uniting to catch a rapist who was attacked eight women in recent weeks.

People living in the community where the rapist has struck met Tuesday night to discuss working together with police to catch him.

Brenda Hill is one volunteer joining the effort.

"I have children and I have a daughter and I don't want her to have to have to go to school or work and have to be afraid that somebody might catch her and rape her," Hill said.

Terri Strickland attended the Tuesday night meeting.

She agrees that the community must come together to capture this criminal.

"We can't allow a rapist to continue to take our women off the streets. We're going to do whatever we can to get this person and get him prosecuted," Strickland said.

Police have circulated a composite sketch of the man they are looking for. They are urging women not be alone on the streets and be aware of their surroundings.

Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon said his deputies are taking an active role in the search for the rapist.

"I have a detail that is specifically assigned to that area so I have people out there looking every single day looking for this rapist," Napoleon said.

People living in the area are pledging to conduct neighborhood patrols.
