K-9 Puppy scam uncovered

By: Nancy Cook
Updated: December 15, 2010

Bossier Sheriff Larry Deen wants Ark-La-Tex residents to be aware of the “Puppy Patrol” scam.

This scam involves phone calls and mail outs asking for donations to the “Puppy Patrol,” a K-9 group that takes police dogs into schools to teach children the benefits of staying drug free. Sheriff Deen wants everyone to know that this is a scam. The Bossier Sheriff’s Office will never call you or send you a letter to ask for a donation for ANY program. Additionally, the Bossier Sheriff’s Office teaches the D.A.R.E. program in local schools and has no affiliation with the “Puppy Patrol” or the “Dogs Against Drugs, Dogs Against Crime” program.

Please do not fall prey to these scammers. If you have any question as to whether a charity is legitimate, call the Bossier Sheriff’s Office, your local law enforcement agency or the Better Business Bureau. “It’s always better to be safe than sorry,” said Bossier Sheriff Larry Deen. “This time of year is often when scammers kick their operations into full gear because of the giving spirit of the holidays. Be sure to research or know full-well exactly who you are donating money to. A simple five minute phone call to your local law enforcement agency could save your time and pocketbook and keep you from enduring the headaches of a scam.”
